Sleep After Travel

So you’re home from vacation and your baby’s sleep is all over the place. You thought she’d go right back to normal when you got back home, but it seems like it’s getting worse. Now what?

The first thing to know is that this is totally normal. My own kids just came home from vacation extremely overtired.

The second is that you can get things back on track quickly.

If you have sleep trained in the past, now is a great time to do that method again. Even just two or three nights can get you back to a well rested child.

Through this time, early bedtime is key. If your child starts showing tired signs at 6, give her a 6:00/6:15 bedtime. Do a quick bedtime routine and get your sweet kiddo to bed. Waiting until your child is overtired will only backfire and delay bedtime further, which will add to the sleep debt from your vacation.

Get back to your regular evening and bedtime routine as quickly as possible when you get home. Whether your kids were up until 10 or 11 on vacation or if they only went to bed a little late, getting back to your pre-vacation routine will help your kids get the sleep they need.

Take note of signs that your kids may be overtired. If you write these down, or even just make a mental note, you will be better able to track when they disappear and you can know your child has caught up on sleep.

If you’re home from vacation and having trouble transitioning back to normal life, a one time call may be a great option for help. Check out all the ways to work with me one-on-one on my “Work With Me” page.
